A handsome vintage Chinese blackened bamboo birdcage of classic barrel-vault form, the arched roof composed of evenly spaced vertical bars rising from a rectangular base frame to meet at a central carrying handle. The base tray is constructed of closely spaced bamboo slats in a grid pattern; the lower frame carries a carved fret border on all four sides. Interior fittings are intact and original: a horizontal perch bar with decorative turned ends spans the width of the cage, and a small feeding cup is mounted to the left side wall. The overall blackened stain finish is even and well-preserved, lending the piece a refined, lacquer-like appearance. A working antecedent to the elaborately carved hardwood cages of the Qing period, this example represents the more restrained everyday tradition of Chinese bamboo cage craft.
