Japan, Taisho Period, c. 1920s

A three-section kasane isho dansu (衣装箪笥) in 100% kiri (paulownia) construction — the traditional wood of choice for clothing storage, prized for its light weight, resistance to moisture and insects, and naturally protective qualities for silk and textile storage. The upper section carries two sliding doors over three small drawers; the middle section has a pair of paneled double doors with a central iron latch; the lower section contains two full-width drawers. Iron Warabite drawer pulls and Hirute hardware throughout. The kiri grain shows the warm figuring characteristic of quality Taisho-period tansu construction. Currently undergoing restoration in our shop — listing posted for advance inventory; piece will be available for purchase upon completion.
