Tsuchiya Koitsu (土屋光逸, 1870–1949) — Lake Ashi in the Hakone Hills in Early Autumn (箱根湖水, Hakone Kosui) — archival giclee reproduction
Contemporary reproduction after original woodblock print, 1938
From the south shore of Lake Ashi (Ashinoko), Fuji rises in full autumn splendor — its snow-capped summit flushed pink at dawn above a sweep of deep blue water. A lone sailboat crosses the lake's center. In the right foreground, a tall cryptomeria pine and autumn-colored maples frame a vermilion torii gate, its reflection lost in the shimmering water below. The composition masterfully layers distance — shrine, forest, lake, mountain, and sky — while the warm autumnal palette of ochre, rose, and blue-grey gives the scene a mood of serene abundance. The English title and artist signature are penciled in the lower margin in Koitsu's hand: Lake Ashi in the Hakone Hills in Early Autumn / Koitsu.
Tsuchiya Koitsu (土屋光逸, 1870–1949) was born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, and moved to Tokyo as a teenager to pursue artistic training. At age fifteen he became an apprentice to the renowned ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika, living with him and studying under his guidance for nearly two decades. This long apprenticeship deeply shaped Koitsu's mastery of woodblock design, particularly his distinctive use of light and shadow to evoke mood and atmosphere. Koitsu's earliest printed designs appeared during the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895). His international reputation grew most strongly after a pivotal meeting in 1931 with publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, leader of the shin hanga movement, after which he began producing landscape prints in the shin hanga style. This design was published by Baba Nobuhiko in 1938 — one of Koitsu's finest Fuji compositions and among his most sought-after prints today.
