Copper alloy with gilt highlights
Antique Japanese Fuchi-Kashira with Soldiers and Cannon
Japan, Edo period (1603–1868)
This rare fuchi-kashira presents a lively depiction of soldiers at work, rendered in copper alloy with gilt detailing. On the fuchi, several figures strain to pull a cannon by rope, their bodies bent forward in exaggerated effort. The spoked wheel and cannon barrel are carefully modeled, grounding the scene in realism while allowing the figures’ expressive gestures to carry a comic undertone.
The kashira complements the theme, depicting more men in close formation, some seated or reclining, their faces animated with gilt highlights. Such crowded, humorous groupings reflect Edo-period taste for satirical or lighthearted imagery even within sword fittings.
This subject is uncommon in sword mountings, making the set notable for its martial yet playful tone. Where most fittings highlight mythological or natural motifs, this pair captures a moment of daily military labor with warmth and imagination.
Condition: Good patina with age-consistent wear. The relief remains clear, and gilt details survive across robes and faces.
