Antique Japanese Lacquered Nurigeta (塗り下駄), Morioka, Floral Lacquer, Velvet Thong, Pair
Japan, Iwate Prefecture (Morioka), Meiji–Taishō period 9"L × 3.25"W × 2.25"H (23 × 8 × 6 cm)
A decorative pair of women's nurigeta (塗り下駄) in two-tooth (二枚歯) construction, produced in Morioka (盛岡), Iwate Prefecture — a northern lacquerware region where winter snow and ice informed practical design. The platform is finished in dense floral lacquerwork — red blossoms and gold detail on a deep green ground with black outlining — covering the full upper surface and wrapping the platform edges. Gilt tacks anchor the hanao (鼻緒) at the thong points. Teeth are fitted with ridged rubber grip strips, a traction feature consistent with northern production for snowy conditions rather than a later modification. The hanao is original: burnt-orange velvet with cream-lined inner facing, fully supple.
Condition: Lacquer surface strong with minor age crazing; floral decoration well-preserved. Thong original and intact.
A regionally specific and complete pair — Morioka provenance, original thong, and practical northern construction in strong decorative condition.
