Hiroshi Yoshida (吉田博, 1876–1950): Sailing Boats, Morning (帆船 朝, Hansen: Asa), from the Inland Sea Series (瀬戸内海集): archival giclée reproduction

Contemporary reproduction after original woodblock print, designed 1926. Reduced from original size.

A two-masted boat sits at anchor in the morning haze, its orange sails graded to gray and glowing against a pale rising sun. A small tender floats alongside, a second sailboat fades into the mist, and the sails are reflected in long blue shapes across the calm water. It is one of the best-known designs of the shin hanga movement.

The original comes from the Inland Sea series (Seto Naikai shu) of 1926. The artist’s signature and seal are in the block, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston holds an impression. Yoshida printed his own work, and the original sheet measures about 21½ × 15¾ inches.

Yoshida trained as a Western-style painter and traveled in Europe and America before taking up woodblock printing in 1920. He is known for his fine control of color and atmosphere.

Printed locally by a professional print house on acid-free archival fine-art paper with fade-resistant pigmented inks.
