Vintage Japanese Celadon Crane Motif Vase 13"H
Late 20th century, c1996
Dimensions: 13"H x 7.5"W
Wheel-thrown Japanese ceramic vase with a high-fired celadon glaze, decorated with repeating roundels enclosing flying cranes (鶴 tsuru) amid stylized cloud forms. The decoration is executed in layered slip and underglaze tones, producing a soft tonal contrast beneath a glossy, crackled celadon surface. The lower section features a band of molded and incised geometric motifs, adding rhythmic structure to the overall design. The form is symmetrical and carefully controlled, with a waisted body and short cylindrical neck.
The crane motif, traditionally associated with longevity and good fortune in Japan, is here rendered in a refined, decorative manner consistent with late 20th-century revival and studio production rather than pre-modern ware. The base bears a painted mark reading 日光 (Nikkō), along with an attached presentation label.
Fully glazed base with controlled crackle, clean foot rim, and uniform firing consistent with contemporary kiln production. No cracks or repairs observed. Minor surface variations and glaze pooling consistent with manufacture rather than age-related wear.
