Japanese 19th Century Gilt Welcome Sign Hotei Painted Wood Kanban

A richly expressive relief wall plaque depicting Hotei (布袋), the Laughing Buddha—one of the Shichifukujin (Seven Lucky Gods) and a symbol of contentment, generosity, and good fortune. The jovial visage, bald and smiling with full cheeks and rounded form, embodies his role as the wandering monk who carried gifts for children and the poor in his great cloth sack.

Dimensions 14"H x 12"W

The figure is modeled in shallow relief and finished in gold lacquer and pigment over a dark ground, with charming age-related craquelure to the gilding that enhances its character. The rectangular wooden panel bears traces of original lacquer finish along the edges and includes a metal suspension loop for hanging display.

This type of plaque was likely intended for placement in a shopfront, temple alcove, or household tokonoma, invoking prosperity and happiness upon the space. Hotei’s open smile and red-accented lips, combined with the soft gleam of the gilt surface, convey warmth and benevolence—an enduring visual blessing from Japan’s folk-Buddhist pantheon.

Condition: Surface wear and edge losses consistent with age; stable craquelure to lacquered finish; overall very good, stable presentation with rich patina.
