Handmade matcha chawan with deep tenmoku black exterior, oil-spot blue speckle glaze, and black glazed interior
Japan, contemporary
A handmade chawan in the tenmoku tradition, the rounded exterior covered in a deep black glaze with fine blue oil-spot speckle — the crystalline flecks emerging from the dark ground with quiet luminosity. The interior is glazed in the same deep black. The base is unglazed terracotta-pink stoneware. The compact, slightly inward-curving form sits well in both hands. Made in Japan. New, unused.
Dimensions: approximately 5"W × 3"H (13 × 8 cm) Weight: Less than 1 lb
Condition: New.
Tenmoku with oil-spot is among the most celebrated glaze effects in East Asian ceramics — this example brings that tradition into an accessible, well-made contemporary form. (12190436)
