ntique Japanese Kawari Kabuto Helmet – Hōju-no-Tama Flaming Jewel Crest – Edo Period Samurai Armor

A striking example of a Japanese kawari kabuto — an imaginative, sculptural style of samurai helmet popular during the Edo period (17th–19th century). This bold design features a dramatic maedate (forecrest) in the form of the Hōju-no-Tama (宝珠の玉), the Flaming Jewel of Buddhist Enlightenment.

The tall, flaring hachi (bowl) is finished in a brilliant gold-speckled urushi lacquer, contrasting beautifully with the black lacquered plates and deep indigo silk lacing (odoshi) of the multi-plate shikoro (neck guard). The menpō (facial armor), with its fierce black lacquer, horsehair moustache, and detachable nose, exemplifies the expressive theatricality of Edo-period armor — both functional and intimidating.

As a kawari kabuto, this helmet departs from traditional bowl shapes in favor of a more artistic silhouette designed to reflect the wearer’s individuality and rank. The flaming jewel crest represents the Buddhist wish-fulfilling gem, a radiant emblem of enlightenment and indomitable spirit, while the rising flames symbolize wisdom triumphing over darkness.

Mounted on a custom wood display stand, this helmet makes a commanding centerpiece for any samurai collection.

Symbolism of the Flaming Jewel (Hōju-no-Tama)

The Hōju-no-Tama or “Sacred Jewel” is a traditional Buddhist emblem symbolizing enlightenment, virtue, and the granting of spiritual wishes. Frequently adopted by warrior monks and samurai of esoteric sects, it expresses the union of spiritual devotion and martial resolve — a fitting emblem for the warrior’s path (bushidō).
