Japanese Edo Period Iron Sukashi Tsuba – Openwork Sword Guard – Abstract Design
Authentic Japanese iron sukashi tsuba (openwork sword guard) dating to the Edo period, likely 18th–19th century. This piece features a striking abstract openwork design with rounded square form and asymmetrical hitsu-ana, giving it a bold modernist appearance while remaining deeply traditional in construction.
The tsuba is hand-carved from iron plate with a rich dark brown patina developed through age and handling. The openwork carving is thick and sculptural, with soft flowing curves and strong negative space composition. One hitsu-ana is formed in an unusual clover-like shape, adding additional visual character.
Likely influenced by Shoami or provincial sukashi traditions of the late Edo period. The guard has an appealing wabi-sabi aesthetic and displays beautifully.
