Antique Japanese Iron Tsuba with Bamboo & Plum Blossom Design – Edo Period Samurai Sword Guard

Authentic Japanese iron tsuba (samurai sword guard) decorated with an elegant bamboo and plum blossom motif in mixed metal inlay and engraving.

This refined tsuba features a minimalist composition with a flowering plum branch extending across the face, accented with bamboo leaves above. The blossoms and foliage retain traces of gold-colored inlay, while subtle bluish patination around portions of the bamboo suggests the former presence of shakudo or copper alloy surface decoration.

The reverse continues the botanical theme with engraved pine needles and small clustered foliage, creating a seasonal composition associated with perseverance, renewal, and longevity in Japanese symbolism. Together, the plum, bamboo, and pine evoke the classic “Three Friends of Winter” motif often found in Edo-period decorative arts.

The plate has a soft rounded square form with a deep brown iron patina developed through age and handling. The understated design and restrained use of mixed metals are characteristic of late Edo period aesthetic sensibilities.

Condition:
Good antique condition with age-related wear, oxidation, surface rubbing, and losses to some of the inlay and patina. Please review photographs carefully for details and overall condition.
