Antique Japanese Iron Sukashi Tsuba – Edo Period Samurai Sword Guard – Scroll Design
Authentic Japanese iron sukashi tsuba (openwork sword guard) from the Edo period, featuring an elegant symmetrical scrolling vine or arabesque design within a circular form.
This tsuba is hand-cut from iron plate with classic openwork construction and a deep naturally aged brown patina developed over centuries. The design combines flowing curling forms with geometric negative space, creating a refined and balanced composition typical of traditional Japanese sword fittings.
The rounded form and scrolling sukashi elements are reminiscent of Shoami school and other decorative Edo period tosogu traditions. The iron surface shows age, wear, and oxidation consistent with genuine antique use and handling.
The guard retains a strong sculptural presence and displays beautifully both as a collectible sword fitting and as a standalone work of Japanese metal art.
Condition:
Good antique condition with visible age, oxidation, surface wear, and patina variations consistent with age. No major cracks or repairs observed. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition details.
