Edo Period Kozuka with Scholars in Gilt Relief
Japan, Edo period (18th–19th century)

This fine kozuka handle (mount for a kogatana utility knife) is crafted from shakudō, the dark copper-gold alloy prized in sword fittings, and decorated with figures in high relief. The scene shows multiple scholars or sages in conversation and study, a common motif reflecting the admiration of Chinese literati culture in Japan.

One central figure is seated beside open scrolls, while others hold fans and converse, their robes richly detailed with gilt embellishments. Subtle variations in surface finish, including a reddish copper accent on one face, bring depth and individuality to each figure.

The composition is carved against a darkened ground, the gilding enhancing contrasts of form and fabric. This careful balance of blackened alloy and gold ornamentation exemplifies Edo-period craftsmanship, where kozuka were both practical accessories and miniature works of art.

Condition: The kozuka shows wear consistent with age and use, with some gilding softened from handling. Relief carving remains crisp, and the back is undecorated, bearing a smooth patina.
