Edo-Period Tatami Kabuto (折畳兜), Karuta-Kusari Helmet with Red-Lacquer Shikoro, c. 18th–19th Century
Portable samurai helmet designed to fold flat for travel and rapid mobilization. The dome is constructed from black-lacquered karuta (rectangular iron plates) linked by kusari (chain mail) over a textile ground. A flexible three-lame shikoro (neck guard) of iron plates is finished in vermilion/red lacquer and laced in indigo, providing lightweight protection with striking Edo color contrast. Tatami helmets like this were favored by lower-ranking samurai and ashigaru, and by retainers on the road—durable, practical armor with the presence of true battlefield gear.
