Handmade Banko ware matcha chawan in mottled blue-white unofu glaze with deep navy interior — Fuji unofu style
Japan, Banko Ware (万古焼), contemporary
A handmade chawan (抹茶碗) in the Fuji unofu (富士うのふ) style, the rounded form covered in a heavily mottled glaze of white and indigo-blue with dark speckle throughout, evoking the ash-flecked snowfields of Mount Fuji. The interior is a deep, smooth navy blue with subtle pooling at the center. The rim is finished in a dark navy band. The foot is unglazed brown stoneware. The hand-formed rim has a gentle organic irregularity. Made in Japan. New, unused.

The Fuji unofu glaze — named for its resemblance to the volcanic snowscape of Mt. Fuji — is a celebrated expression of the Banko tradition.
