Japanese Lacquer Hira Natsume Flat Tea Caddy Red and Black Omotesenke Style
Japan, Showa period
2 in H × 3 in dia (5 × 8 cm); Weight: under 1 lb (under 0.5 kg)
A hira-natsume (平棗) in the wide, flat-lidded form associated with Omotesenke school tea practice, finished in a classic two-tone scheme: the broad flat lid in warm vermilion-red lacquer, the deep bowl-form body in lustrous black, with a red-lacquered interior. The restrained, undecorated surfaces place full emphasis on the quality of the lacquer itself — smooth, even, and well-polished. The lid seats cleanly. A small knob finial crowns the black body when inverted, visible in display.
Condition: Very good; lacquer sound with light wear consistent with use.
A clean, well-made example of a school-specific tea caddy form, immediately recognizable to practitioners.
