Japanese Meiji Cloisonne Enamel Meiping Vase Oxblood Red Uroko Scale Ground
Cloisonné Enamel Meiping Vase / Shippo / Oxblood Red Uroko Scale Ground
Japan, Meiji Period, late 19th–early 20th century
A meiping-form cloisonné vase worked overall in a deep oxblood red ground composed of a finely rendered overlapping scale (uroko) pattern — an effect achieved through dense wire placement rather than figurative decoration, creating a richly textured monochromatic surface. Gilt brass mounts at rim and foot. The restrained, pattern-forward design reflects the refined aesthetic sensibility of Meiji-period Japanese shippo production.
Dimensions: 9"H (23 cm) by 4.25" diameter; Weight: 1 lb 12oz
Meiji-era Japanese cloisonné (shippo-yaki) is distinguished from its Chinese counterpart by finer wire work, more controlled enamel surfaces, and frequent use of allover patterned grounds as a primary decorative device. This example is a strong representative of that tradition.
Condition: Very good; enamel surface even and intact.
