Cloisonné Enamel Baluster Vase / Shippo / Cobalt and Black Ground Butterfly and Floral
Japan, Meiji Period, late 19th–early 20th century
A baluster-form cloisonné vase on a two-tone cobalt blue and black ground, the two fields divided diagonally by a turquoise beaded wire line. The cobalt field is decorated with polychrome floral sprays and scrolling foliate tendrils; the black field carries butterflies and scattered flowers in white, yellow, red, and green. The shoulder features a scalloped green border with yellow dot accents; the foot and neck retain gilt brass mounts. The fine wire work and controlled enamel surface are characteristic of quality Meiji-period shippo production.
