Antique Japanese Menuki with “Kinsatsu” Gold Tag Motif
Japan, Edo–Meiji period (19th century)

This unusual Japanese sword ornament (menuki) is crafted in the form of a small gilt plaque shaped like a roofed tag, bearing the inscription 金札 (Kinsatsu, “gold tag”). The piece is executed in copper alloy with traces of original gilding preserved on both faces.

Menuki were decorative and symbolic fittings placed beneath the wrapping of a sword’s hilt (tsuka). They not only enhanced grip but also conveyed auspicious themes for the owner. In this case, the use of 金札 (Kinsatsu) would have been read as a charm for wealth, success, and protection—effectively carrying the idea of a talisman on the warrior’s sidearm.

The form, with its peaked “roof” framing the characters, suggests reference to protective plaques found in shrines and households, adapted here into miniature for martial use. The back is left plain with a projecting peg for mounting.

Condition: Gilding worn with age, surface patination consistent with Edo–Meiji manufacture. Peg intact, good overall preservation.
