Pair of Japanese rotating sakura lantern table lamps by Hiunkudo, black lacquer and brass with chirimen fabric shades

Japan, Showa Period, mid-20th century

A second pair of Japanese electric table lamps in the traditional andon lantern form by Hiunkudo (雛雲洞), the same registered Japanese specialty maker as the companion pair. Each lamp features the same rotating inner mechanism (kaiten tō kikō — 回転灯機構) driven by convection heat from the bulb, causing the shade to turn slowly and casting softly animated light through the fabric panels. The globular pumpkin-form shade panels are fitted with chirimen-style fabric printed with a delicate sakura design in soft pink tones on a warm cream ground — a lighter, more dispersed pattern than the companion pair, giving these lamps a subtler, more intimate character when lit. The shade cage is black lacquered with a rounded ribbed profile. The stem is black lacquer with cast brass collar bands embossed with floral and scrolling motifs. The domed petal-form base is black lacquer. Original boxes and bulbs included. Japanese domestic voltage (100V) — a step-down transformer is required for US use.

Dimensions: 15"H × 5"W (38 × 13 cm) each Condition: Very good, consistent with careful storage. Original boxes and bulbs present. Rotating mechanism and electrical components should be tested before use; rewiring or use with a transformer recommended.
