Japanese Tea Ceremony Ceramic Chawan Tea Bowl Year Of The Monkey Saru

This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). It dates to the late Taisho Era (c. 1925). Suitable more for the winter season, it is deep styled chawan used to keep the tea warm longer (see enlarged pictures). This may be even more of a treat for those born in the year of the Monkey since it is decorated with the kanji that read Saru or monkey.

This chawan measures 4 3/4" in diameter by 3" tall (12 x 7.5 cm). Having been in storage for over 70 years and protected by its original wooden presentation box, it remains in very fine condition. It comes complete with its original cryptomeria wood box.
