Vintage Japanese Kanzashi Hairpin – Red Lacquer Makie with Gold and Mother-of-Pearl Floral Design – 6½"

Description

Charming kanzashi (簪) hair ornament with a round red lacquer head finely decorated in makie (蒔絵) gold and inlaid raden (螺鈿, mother-of-pearl). The design features stylized blossoms and clover leaves in shimmering gold, green, and iridescent white on a rich crimson field. The slender amber-tone shaft, likely molded celluloid, reflects the late Meiji to early Shōwa transition, when traditional lacquer motifs were adapted to modern materials for everyday elegance.

Such colorful and playful designs were especially popular in the Taishō and early Shōwa eras (c.1910–1935), when women’s hairstyles embraced both traditional nihongami and Western-influenced forms. The combination of makie and raden on a light resin substrate shows the enduring appeal of classical Japanese decoration in new, accessible formats.

An attractive piece combining folk charm with refined craft detail.
