Traditional Korean yakjang-style (약장) medicine chest with calligraphy drawers

Korea, mid-20th century
Dimensions: 33″H × 20″W × 10″D (84 × 51 × 25 cm)

This vintage Korean apothecary chest is constructed in dark-stained hardwood, fitted with a dense grid of small drawers above larger storage drawers below. The compact, upright form reflects traditional yakjang (藥欌) medicine chests used for organizing dried herbs, roots, and mineral ingredients in Korean herbal practice. Each drawer features a metal ring pull and hand-applied gilt calligraphy identifying its intended contents.

The drawer fronts are individually labeled with classical Chinese characters used in Korean medicine, referencing herbs, botanicals, and compounds. The visual rhythm of the gold script against the deeply worn wood surface gives the chest a strong graphic presence while reinforcing its functional origins. Subtle variations in brushwork and spacing suggest hand-lettering rather than machine transfer, adding to the piece’s character.

Produced in the mid-20th century, this chest reflects a revival and continuation of traditional Korean furniture forms rather than an earlier Joseon-period original. It was likely made for decorative, shop, or educational use, or for a practitioner maintaining a traditional aesthetic during a period of modernization. The form closely follows older prototypes, preserving the cultural vocabulary of Korean herbal medicine.

With its many small compartments and generous lower drawers, the chest works equally well today as functional storage or as a statement display piece. It is especially well suited for collectors of Asian furniture, pharmacists’ chests, or interiors seeking texture, history, and visual density.

Condition: General age-appropriate wear throughout, including surface scratches, rubbing, and uneven patina. Drawer action is good overall, with expected minor variation. No major structural issues observed.

A visually striking and culturally rich storage cabinet that brings the language and order of traditional Korean medicine into a contemporary interior. Ideal as a focal piece for collectors, designers, or anyone drawn to utilitarian forms with deep historical roots.
