Japanese Indigo Shibori Noren 暖簾, Floral & Seigaiha, Vintage Cotton
Japan, mid-20th century
Approx. 30 in. W × 42 in. L (76 × 107 cm)
A striking two-panel cotton noren (暖簾) executed in deep ai-zome (藍染, indigo) using multiple shibori (絞り) resist techniques working in concert. The upper register carries a dense seigaiha (青海波, overlapping wave scales) border rendered in komebori or ne-maki shibori, its arching forms packed tightly across the full width. Below, sweeping curved stems — likely depicting wisteria (藤, fuji) or a related trailing vine — cascade from the upper field, each branch rendered in fine itajime or makiage stitching that produces crisp leaf forms with characteristic resist halos. The radiating frond-like lines flanking the central motif use a beaded arashi or ne-maki technique, creating rhythmic dotted arcs that animate the deep indigo ground. The interplay of at least three distinct resist methods within a single composition — each producing a different visual texture — speaks to a practiced textile hand.
Condition: Good vintage condition consistent with age and use; some natural fading and light surface creasing present. Indigo ground remains rich and saturated. Center seam between panels intact.
A rare and accomplished example of Japanese resist-dyed textile art, combining technical complexity with bold graphic impact — equally compelling displayed or collected.
