Teruhide Kato (加藤晃秀, 1936–2015)

Teruhide Kato was born in Kyoto in 1936 and trained in Japanese painting at Kyoto Art University (often rendered “Kyoto Art College” in English). He first built a successful career as a designer in the kimono world—especially obi design—before pivoting to woodblock prints around age 50. His Kyoto views quickly found an audience in Japan and abroad; a New York show and the book “Kyoto Romance” helped establish his international reputation. He continued producing prints—collaborating with traditional carvers and printers—until his death in 2015.

The image depicts "Hanagasa Roji" (Flower Umbrella Path), a notable woodblock print by the modern Japanese artist, Teruhide Kato (1936-2015).
Here's more about the artist and the print:
Artist Background Teruhide Kato initially had a successful career as a kimono designer before pursuing his passion for woodblock printing around the age of 50. He studied at Kyoto Art College.
"Hanagasa Roji" This print is also known as "Red Umbrella in Alley" and depicts a traditional Kyoto alleyway with an umbrella left out, symbolizing the rainy season.
Artistic Style Kato's prints are characterized by a balance of traditional Japanese imagery with a modern design aesthetic, often capturing the serene beauty of Kyoto's landscapes and architecture.
Woodblock Printing His works are original woodblock prints, hand-printed on high-quality Washi paper, often published by Unsodo. The print shown is likely a later edition from the original woodblocks.
