Powerful Japanese woodblock print from the Meiji period, depicting a Russian count or general during the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905). The officer stands confidently in full dress uniform, with a fur-lined coat draped around his shoulders, a ceremonial sword in hand, and medals pinned to his chest. His red cap and dark uniform contrast against the snowy battlefield landscape.

In the background, soldiers are seen at work, one climbing a ladder against a tree, creating a sense of immediacy and presence at the front lines.

  • Period: Meiji era, c. 1904–1905 (Russo-Japanese War)

  • Subject: Russian military leader, possibly Count Keller or another high-ranking officer

  • Format: Oban vertical (approx. 10 x 15 in / 25 x 38 cm)

  • Condition: Excellent color and detail; light toning and handling wear consistent with age.

A striking portrait of a Russian commander as seen through Japanese eyes — both propagandistic and documentary in its style.

From the collection of Leonard Sorese an avid collector of Japanese and other Asian antiques.
