This original Meiji-period woodblock print depicts Ōyama Tsunayoshi (大山綱良), a samurai and statesman who served as the governor of Kagoshima during the early years of the Meiji Restoration. Shown in crisp profile, Ōyama is rendered with a sharp, almost Western naturalism that typified the transitional style of the late nineteenth century, as Japan rapidly modernized its visual culture. His expression—resolute and thoughtful—captures the bearing of a loyal administrator who would ultimately meet a tragic fate following the Satsuma Rebellion.

The print belongs to the series “Bunbu Kōmei Den” (Biographies of Men of Literature and Military Accomplishment), one of the most ambitious portrait series of the Meiji era, celebrating distinguished figures in both the military and intellectual realms. The elegant red banner at left contains the series title, while the extensive calligraphic text at upper right provides biographical commentary.

Artist: Suzuki Toshimoto (鈴木年基, 1837–1900), a pupil of the Utagawa school, was active through the mid-Meiji period and known for his finely detailed portraiture. His style bridges the visual language of Edo-period ukiyo-e and the realism inspired by Western lithographic techniques, often employed in the documentation of historical figures.
