This exceptional Japanese Chadansu (tea utensil cabinet) is crafted entirely from solid keyaki (Japanese zelkova), prized historically for its dramatic swirling grain and its strength, durability, and resonance. The chest is richly accented with hand-carved persimmon wood pulls and trim, lending warm tonal contrast and demonstrating the high level of traditional craftsmanship.

Estimated to date from the early Shōwa era, circa 1937, based on an original Japanese newspaper sheet discovered lining one of the lower drawers (included and retained), this cabinet would have been used in a merchant’s tea or household setting to store fine chadōgu (tea ceremony tools), ceramics, and daily items. The interior offers seven hand-joined drawers and sliding doors fitted with original translucent patterned glass in a traditional kōshi / kumiko-style design.

Symbolism of the Crane & Turtle

The most striking feature of this Chadansu is the pair of hand-carved symbolic guardians mounted at the upper finials:

  • Tsuru (crane) — emblem of longevity, fidelity, nobility, and peace. In Japanese myth, cranes are said to live 1,000 years, and are believed to carry prayers to the heavens. The crane is central in tea culture, wedding traditions, and New Year symbolism.

  • Kame (turtle) — symbol of endurance, wisdom, and protection. According to Japanese folklore, the tortoise lives 10,000 years and is often shown carrying sacred islands on its back. The pairing of crane and turtle together represents harmony, long life, and good fortune—traditionally bestowed upon households or newly established businesses as a blessing.

Their presence on this piece strongly suggests that it was originally made as a celebratory commission, likely for a family home or merchant shop opening.
