Antique Japanese Arita Imari Blue & White Hexagonal Porcelain Cup 19th C.

A finely hand-painted antique Japanese Arita / Imari blue-and-white porcelain cup, dating to the late Edo–early Meiji period (19th century). Formed in an elegant hexagonal shape, each facet decorated with alternating circular medallions in a variety of geometric patterns, intersected with bold diagonal brushwork.

The interior rim features a classic key-fret (sayagata) border, a motif widely used in Buddhist art symbolizing continuity, prosperity, and long life. The cup rests on a raised circular foot exhibiting natural firing characteristics and glaze pooling typical of early kiln production.

The unusual hexagonal form and playful pattern balance formal refinement with artistic spontaneity, making it a desirable piece for collectors of fine Japanese porcelain, tea utensils, or interior display.

PERIOD: 19th century, Edo–Meiji transition
ORIGIN: Japan, likely Arita (Hizen Province)
MATERIAL: Porcelain, underglaze cobalt decoration
DIMENSIONS: Approx. 3.25″ H x 3.75″ W (8.2 cm x 9.5 cm)
CONDITION: Excellent antique condition with expected minor kiln impurities and tiny glaze specks common to early firing. No cracks or repairs noted.

A rare surviving example of early Japanese porcelain artistry—well suited for tea use (yunomi / guinomi / sake cup) or display in a collection.
