A getabako (下駄箱) is a traditional Japanese shoe cabinet used for storing footwear, especially at the entrance of homes, temples, schools, or inns. The name literally means “geta box,” referring to geta—traditional Japanese wooden sandals. Typically made of wood, getabako can range from simple, utilitarian designs to more ornate pieces. They usually have shelves or cubbyholes behind sliding or hinged doors and are placed in the genkan (entryway) to keep shoes organized and the interior clean, in keeping with Japanese customs of removing shoes before entering.
