This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). Suitable more for the summer season, I t’s thin walls allow the tea to cool faster during the hot summer months. It has hand scratched designs in geometric patterns of what looks to be the white clay base into the pink and gray glaze. Stamps of flowers ring the bottom of the bowl.
This chawan measures 5.25" wide at its widest by 2.5" tall.
Having been in storage for 70 years it remains in fine condition.
