Takahashi Hiroaki Shotei (高橋弘明, 1871–1945): Junks in Inatori Bay, Izu (伊豆稲取): archival giclée reproduction

Contemporary reproduction after original woodblock print, designed 1926.

Large coastal trading junks lie at anchor in Inatori Bay at dusk, their sterns glowing with lantern light. The sky grades from orange at the horizon to deep blue, a thin crescent moon hangs overhead, and warm reflections ripple across the water. A fisherman in a small boat passes in the foreground, and a thatched village sits under the hills on the right.

The original was published by Watanabe in 1926 and is signed “Hiroaki ga” with the artist’s Shotei seal. Inatori is a fishing port on the east coast of Japan’s Izu Peninsula. The quiet harbor at dusk is typical of the shin hanga landscapes made for Watanabe.

Takahashi Hiroaki, who also worked under the name Shotei, made prints for the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo during the shin hanga movement. His night and twilight harbor scenes are among his best-known designs.

Printed locally by a professional print house on acid-free archival fine-art paper with fade-resistant pigmented inks.
