Tsuchiya Koitsu (土屋光逸, 1870–1949): Lake Kawaguchi (河口湖, Kawaguchiko): archival giclée reproduction

Contemporary reproduction after original woodblock print, designed 1933.

Two tall pines frame a snow-capped Mount Fuji rising above the still, blue water of Lake Kawaguchi. Low cloud drifts across the lower slopes, a wooded headland sits at the left, and soft reflections cover the lake. The thick bark and dark green needles of the pines contrast with the pale distant mountain.

The original is dated May, Showa 8 (1933) in the margin, signed “Koitsu” with his seal, and published by Doi. Lake Kawaguchi is the most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes, and a popular view for artists of the shin hanga era.

Koitsu was born in Hamamatsu and studied for 19 years under Kobayashi Kiyochika. He began designing for Watanabe Shozaburo in 1931, at age 60, and became known for landscapes with delicate light effects.

Printed locally by a professional print house on acid-free archival fine-art paper with fade-resistant pigmented inks.
