Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (月岡芳年, 1839–1892): Chang E Flees to the Moon (嫦娥奔月, Joga Hongetsu), from One Hundred Aspects of the Moon: archival giclée reproduction

Contemporary reproduction after original woodblock print, published 1885.

The Chinese moon goddess Chang E floats upward on a bank of clouds, holding the vessel of the elixir she drank. Her robes and long ribbons trail behind her in red, green, gold and violet, and the great curve of the moon fills the corner of the sky. Her downcast face and the movement of the cloud and ribbons make this one of the most admired designs in the series.

In the myth, Chang E drank the elixir of immortality and rose to the moon, where she remains. The original was published in October 1885 as one of the first prints in One Hundred Aspects of the Moon (Tsuki hyakushi). It was published by Akiyama Buemon and the series ran until 1892.

Yoshitoshi is regarded as the last great master of ukiyo-e. One Hundred Aspects of the Moon was his most successful series, and buyers reportedly lined up before dawn for each new print.

Printed locally by a professional print house on acid-free archival fine-art paper with fade-resistant pigmented inks.
