Chinese Ceramic Figure of Shoulao, God of Longevity
China, mid-20th century
Height: approximately 11 inches
A finely modeled and dark-glazed ceramic sculpture of Shoulao (寿老), the benevolent God of Longevity and one of the most beloved figures in the Chinese Daoist pantheon.
Shoulao is portrayed as a jovial elderly man with a high, domed forehead symbolizing wisdom, a long flowing beard, and a smiling expression of serenity and goodwill. He wears flowing scholar’s robes tied with a sash and a tall cap typical of immortals and sages. In his right hand he holds a gnarled staff—the emblem of his immortal wanderings—and in his left, a peach-shaped fan, the tao-fan, symbolizing the fabled peaches of immortality and his power to confer long life. The leaf pattern incised into the fan is crisply detailed, emphasizing its symbolic form.
The brown stoneware surface is finished with a subtle semi-matte patina that enhances the sense of age and quiet dignity. The base bears an impressed seal mark, possibly that of the artisan or workshop, adding to its collectible and scholarly appeal.
Condition: Excellent overall with minor firing irregularities and light surface wear consistent with age.
An expressive and warm depiction of Shoulao, merging sculptural vitality with symbolic Daoist imagery—representing blessings of health, wisdom, and longevity for the home or altar.
