Vintage Chinese Hanging Scroll — Egrets Among Lotus, Signed and Dated 曉露 丁亥年
China, Dinghai cyclical year (丁亥年) — 20th century, exact cycle unconfirmed
Scroll 16″W × 63″H; painted area 12.5″W × 41″H
A finely painted hanging scroll depicting two egrets standing among lotus leaves, blossoms, and buds at a pond's edge. The birds are worked in fine linear detail with delicate white plumage strokes, set against layered green lotus leaves and pink-and-white lotus flowers.
The scroll is titled and signed at upper left, read as 曉露 (Xiǎo Lù, "Dawn Dew") with a cyclical date of 丁亥年 (a Dinghai year) and an artist's signature, followed by a red seal. Egrets paired with lotus are a classic auspicious combination in Chinese painting, often read as a wish for purity and continued honors.
A faint pencil inscription on the reverse appears to echo part of the title, though it isn't fully legible.
