This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). It dates to the early Showa Era (c. 1930) and has the signature on the bottom of the Japanese artist(see picture 7). Suitable more for the summer season, it is shallow styled chawan. It has a white base glaze that has flecks of black throughout and is decorated as it painted with an ink brush. There is a hint of green inside the bowl.
This chawan measures 6" wide at its widest by 2 3/8" tall (15 x 6 cm). Having been in storage for years it remains in fine condition.
