Vintage Japanese black maneki-neko money bank symbolizing protection and good fortune
Japan, mid Shōwa period (circa 1950–1970)
Dimensions: 7"H x 4.5"W (17.8 x 11.4 cm)
A charming vintage Japanese black maneki-neko (招き猫) fortune cat bank, painted in glossy black enamel with vivid red, gold, and green accents. The raised right paw is a traditional gesture inviting good luck, prosperity, and successful business, while the black coloration is associated with protection from misfortune and warding off evil—often favored by merchants and households seeking safety and strength.
The cat holds a large gold koban coin decorated with red script for 招福 (shōfuku), meaning "inviting good fortune." The collar, bell, and bib are richly painted and decorated with gold foil accents. A coin slot is located on the back, and the underside retains its original sealed base, consistent with mid-century ceramic bank production.
A lively and expressive example of the classic luck-bringing figure, ideal for display in shop entrances, studio spaces, home altars, or as a playful collectible accent.
Good vintage condition with scattered surface wear and paint loss consistent with age and use.
