Vintage Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Sake Cup Holder 3.75"W
Japan, early to mid 20th century
Dimensions: 2.25"H × 3.75"W
This vintage Japanese porcelain sake cup holder (sakazuki-dai / cup rest) is formed with an octagonal dish-like rim rising from a short cylindrical foot, designed to hold and present a small sake cup during service. Executed in underglaze cobalt blue on a soft white porcelain body, the decoration depicts a continuous hand-painted landscape featuring Mount Fuji with layered slopes and a pine tree in the foreground, rendered in expressive brushwork typical of traditional blue-and-white wares.
The faceted rim provides visual rhythm while framing the central well, which is glazed and recessed to securely seat a cup. The exterior foot is also decorated with abbreviated landscape motifs, tying the composition together when viewed from all angles. The glaze shows gentle pooling and a slightly bluish tone, consistent with practical tableware rather than export-only ceramics.
Unmarked on the base, with a neatly finished foot ring showing light kiln contact and expected wear. Overall condition is very good, with minor firing irregularities and small glaze imperfections consistent with age and use.
A functional and decorative piece suitable for display, use in a sake service setting, or inclusion in a collection of Japanese blue-and-white ceramics.
