This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). It dates to the mid Showa Era (c. 1950) and has the signature on the bottom of the Japanese artist(see picture 8). Suitable more for the winter season, it is a deep styled chawan able to hold the warmth of the tea longer. It is washed in an olive green glaze that has pooled in the bottom of the bowl making for a very deep rich color.
This chawan measures 4 1/2" wide at its widest by 2 1/2" tall (11.5 x 6 cm). Having been in storage for 70 years it remains in fine condition.
