This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). It has a light celadon glaze and comes complete with a special woven bamboo carrying basket. Very intricately woven, the basket has a red and white cotton fabric of plum blossoms. It synches tight to protect the chawan and has a cotton handle on the top to easily transport your chawan. It dates to the mid Showa Era (c. 1950). Suitable more for the summer season, it is shallow styled chawan used to allow the tea to cool more. It is signed near the base (see picture 7).
This chawan measures 5 1/2" wide at its widest by 2 1/2" tall (14 x 6 cm). Having been in storage for 70 years it remains in fine condition.
