Vintage Japanese Carved Wood Sumitsubo Ink-Line Tool with Turtle Motif
Japan, Taishō to early Shōwa period (circa 1915–1935)
Length approx.: 8" (20.3 cm)
A hand-carved wooden sumitsubo (墨壺), the traditional Japanese carpenter’s ink-line tool once used to mark straight building lines before modern chalk reels, but still often used by traditional timber frame builders. This example features a sculpted turtle (kame 亀), a classic symbol of longevity and steady craftsmanship, positioned beside the cotton ink well. The turning wheel operates smoothly, and the iron line guide and spool remain intact, showing authentic working surfaces and period oxidation.
The carving displays good detail to the turtle shell and flowing scroll motifs along the side of the body. The underside is signed in brush script, consistent with individual workshop marking practices of the period.
A charming and fully traditional woodworking tool, both collectible and historically meaningful, ideal for a Japanese tool collection, mingei display, or a wabi-sabi interior setting.
Normal age-related wear, patina, and oxidation to metal parts. No modern repairs observed.
