Japanese Celadon Basket-Weave Vase with Applied Crab – 9.5" Diameter
A finely crafted Japanese celadon porcelain vase with a wide body and flared rim, the surface decorated in a woven basketry motif. The translucent bluish-green seiji (青磁, celadon) glaze flows evenly across the body, accentuating the basket-like texture.
Applied to one side is a naturalistically modeled crab (kani, 蟹), rendered in lifelike polychrome enamel tones of brown, cream, and green. The crab clings playfully to the vessel as if climbing its surface, a motif symbolizing resilience, protection, and auspicious fortune in Japanese art.
Dimensions: 9.5" diameter × 7.5" tall
Period: Likely Taishō era (c. 1920's)
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear consistent with age.
A beautiful piece that harmonizes celadon elegance with Japanese naturalistic decoration, combining the refinement of basketry form with the charm of marine life symbolism.
