Vintage Japanese Chawan Tea Ceremony Bowl Stylized Landscape White & Rust 4.5"
This is a vintage Japanese ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in Japanese chado (tea ceremony). Its thick high walls make it more suitable for tea ceremony of the cooler months. This bowl was hand thrown and high fired for lasting durability. It is has a warm white base clay with a white glaze over that. The outside is in an "orange peel style" lightly painted over with a traditional cross stroke pattern suggesting a stylized landscape of trees and hills in rusty red, as an over glaze of white crackle finishes this bowl. The crackle glaze has darkened beautifully over the yeas due to loving use.
This chawan measures 4 1/2" in diameter by 2 1/4" tall (11.5x 6 cm). Having been in storage, it remains in very fine condition.
