Kannon, also known as Guanyin / Quan Yin in Chinese and Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, is the East Asian goddess of compassion and mercy, revered in Buddhism for embodying the compassion of all Buddhas. This deity can appear in many different forms, with the most common being female in China and Japan, reflecting the goddess's role as a benevolent caretaker and protector who listens to the cries of the world. Originally depicted as male in early Buddhist texts, Kannon's gender shifted over time in response to evolving cultural perceptions about compassion and care-giving qualities, traditionally associated with femininity in East Asia. Often depicted holding a willow branch and a vase of pure water, Kannon is venerated in a wide variety of settings, from grand temples to humble household altars, symbolizing infinite mercy and the promise of salvation and relief from suffering.
