Vintage Japanese meditation singing bowl used in Buddhist and Shinto practice
Japan, early to mid 20th century (circa 1920–1950)
Dimensions: 3"W x 1.5"H (7.6 x 3.8 cm)
A vintage Japanese brass singing bowl traditionally used in meditation and ritual practice by Buddhist monks and Shinto priests. This small ceremonial bowl produces a clear, resonant tone when struck or circled with a striker, supporting seated meditation, purification rites, and contemplative breathwork.
Cast in brass, the bowl displays a smooth, refined interior and a balanced, rounded form that sits comfortably in the hand or on a cushion. The exterior shows natural patina, surface wear, and oxidation typical of decades of handling and devotional use, enhancing its wabi-sabi character and spiritual presence. Concentric turning rings on the base indicate shaping by lathe, common in 20th-century workshop production.
A functional ritual instrument and meaningful display object suitable for altars, tea ceremony spaces, sound meditation, reiki, yoga practice, or interior design with Japanese sensibility.
Good vintage condition with surface marks and wear consistent with age.
