This is a vintage Japanese tetsubin (iron tea pot). It is made of cast iron and is 6.5" in diameter to boil water for tea. The body features grapes and vines with a rough flange line around the base. The lid itself is decorated in the same style. It is made of iron to hold more heat. The water from this tetsubin pours clear and will continue to do so as long as the pot is properly cared for. It measures over all about 6.5x6.5x 8" including the handle and spout. We brought this pot straight from Japan and it remains in fine condition.
Please use this pot to boil only water, if you steap tea in it, the tea will oxodixe with the iron turning the tea very bitter. This will produce a layer of iron-tannate. While this layer will protect your tetsubin from rust, it won't make good tea, but it will make good water suitable for tea brewed in a separate vessel.
