This vintage Japanese natsume (tea caddy for 抹茶 matcha) features elegant black lacquer with maki-e gold and colored powder techniques forming the classical Yatsuhashi iris motif—one of the most poetic scenes in traditional Japanese art. The vessel has a refined rounded form with a softly domed lid, creating a quiet presence ideal for the 茶 ceremony.
The swirling gold lines evoke flowing water and the movement of wind across a marsh, while the irises (菖蒲 shōbu) express seasonal renewal, courage, and good fortune. The bridge elements reference the legendary Ise Monogatari episode where the zig-zag walkway crosses fields of blooming irises, a theme beloved in lacquerware, screen painting, and textile design.
The accompanying tomobako (signed wood storage box) bears the signature and seal of lacquer artist Tanaka Muneyasu (田中宗凌), a traditionally trained craftsman associated with Kaga lacquer heritage. The interior leaflet further identifies the maker and notes apprenticeship under respected lacquer master Nakamura Sōin.
A beautifully made and visually vibrant piece, suitable for active use in chanoyu or as an exceptional decorative accent in a refined interior, alcove, or collector’s display.
Condition: Excellent condition with minimal handling marks; lacquer surface remains glossy and clean. PLEASE NOTE: on the lid a bit of the inlay flower pedal has flaked off. Ribbon and box show light age-appropriate wear.
A refined and collectible example of contemporary Japanese lacquer art with a classical theme—display-ready and ideal for tea practitioners, Japanese art enthusiasts, and elegant interior styling.
