A Mashiko-yaki (益子焼) stoneware plate in the E-Shino (絵志野) manner — the ash-white glaze ground carrying a botanical composition in iron-oxide brushwork with a single cobalt blue accent at the flower head, a combination that places this piece within the tradition of painted Shino-style ware where a restrained use of color enriches rather than overwhelms the composition. The plant form — a single stem with lateral leaves rising to a blue-accented bloom — is painted with the economical, assured brushwork characteristic of accomplished Mashiko production. The wide iron-brown rim gives the plate a strong graphic border. The reverse shows the natural sandy clay body with a wide, slightly rough foot ring.

The E-Shino tradition, originating in the Mino kilns of the Momoyama period and absorbed into the Mashiko folk pottery vocabulary through the mingei movement, represents one of the points at which Japanese ceramic decoration most closely approaches the spirit of ink painting — the image built from a minimum of marks, the glaze doing the rest. The cobalt accent here is used with characteristic restraint, landing exactly where the composition needs it.
